Gire has an extensive background in journalism, and has been a film critic for a couple of decades writing for the Daily Herald. He has also attributed film critique to various TV stations around Chicago, such as Fox and CBS. Gire also help found the Chicago Film Critics Association, which is where he currently serves as the president. This organization is a non-profit organization that gives out awards, and hold film festivals.
He has won many awards for his work, most notably from the Associated Press, and the Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. As well as winning the Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism in Art Criticism six times, which is only given to the best journalism in Chicago.
Gire has a bachelor and master degrees in communications, which he attained through Eastern Illinois University. EIU was also where he taught his first communications college course, and where he currently is a member of the Journalism Advisory Counsel.
